Jamarcus Kenneth Gaston grew up in the very small town of Great Falls, South Carolina in Chester County. He graduated Salutatorian from Great Falls High School in 2003 and headed to the mountainous upstate to attend Furman University on an academic and music scholarship. While at Furman, Jamarcus studied Tuba with trombonist Dr. Mark Britt, playing in the Furman Paladin Regiment, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Brass Quintet, and Symphony Orchestra.He served as the tuba section leader for several years, as well as Publicity Chairperson for two years.
Outside of the music department Jamarcus also wrote for Furman’s student publication ,The Paladin, for four years. Jamarcus was also selected as a Freshman Journalist, where he documented his entire freshman year in words and images for prospective students to the university. While at Furman Jamarcus also worked vigourously to revive the schools television news program. Jamarcus recruited reporters, photographers, anchors, and producers for his campus news program “WFTV Reports.” Jamarcus also served as an anchor, reporter,producer,photographer, and News Director. Through “WFTV Reports,” Jamarcus and his team had the opportunity to meet and cover many big names including: Nikki Giovanni, 2008 Republican Presidential candidate John McCain,John Stossel, John Glenn, and Zell Miller.
During his four years at Furman Jamarcus continued to further his interest in community service and music by serving as marching/music instructor at several area high schools, narrating/producing a promotional video for a non-profit literacy organization, serving as a camp counselor during the summers,and becoming active in a vocational exploration center that took him on a trip to Cuba. Jamarcus also spent part of a summer in Upstate New York working at Camp Kiwago, a camp for homeless children. Prior to graduation, Jamarcus was awarded the Charles A. Batson Outstanding Student in Broadcast Journalism Award from Furman University. Jamarcus was elected to Who’s Who Among American College and University Students and graduated from Furman in 2007, with a double major in Music and Communication Studies.
Soon after graduation Jamarcus was hired by WSPA News Channel 7 in Spartanburg, SC as a Writer and Producer in the Marketing Department. In addition to promoting all News Channel 7 newscasts, Jamarcus also field produced and edited stories for the station’s “Caring for the Carolinas” series and has written pieces for telethons and other special projects. Jamarcus was chosen to host a quarterly community interest show on News Channel 7’s sister station WYCW-TV, where he will highlight young people doing amazing things in the community.
In 2009 Jamarcus was promoted to be reporter of the brand new entertainment show “Scene on 7.” Each weeknight yhou can see him interviewing celebrities like Nelly Furtado, Tyler Perry, Dolly Parton, Josh Kelley, Wayne Gretzky, Jerry Rice, and Mark Harmon to name a few. He also gets to tell the most interesting stories with the amazing people of Upstate , SC and Western, NC. He has several popular segments: “Dare JG”—“Gaston Grubs” ”
In his spare time Jamarcus enjoys working out, running(he is proud to have run two half marathons and one full),volunteering, public speaking, and traveling. Jamarcus also is a news junkie and reads anything he can get his hands on. Jamarcus loves hearing from people and is always looking for a new story to tell.
